Better News for the Benefics

Venus and Jupiter were called the “benefic” planets in traditional astrology for their association with life-giving, moderate effects. They are not without faults or harmful extremes, but capable of bringing hope and help when they are strong and well-positioned. Both will receive status upgrades this month.

Jupiter represents growth, peace, prosperity, and the social structures that uphold cultural values. Legislation, law, higher education, and religion are the realm of Jupiter. Jupiter stations direct in Cancer on March 10.

It will take a week or two for the good-willed giant to pick up speed, but this is a fortunate turn. While Jupiter has been exalted in Cancer since June 2025, it’s been handicapped with squares to Saturn and retrograde motion. It’s now 12 degrees outside the Saturn square aspect and moving away, growing stronger each day until it moves into Leo in late June.

Venus represents social cohesion, bringing people together through pleasure, moderated social conduct, or the arts. Diplomacy and respectful interactions are in Venus’ sphere. Venus moves into Taurus on Mar 30 and has a strong influence over the early days of April.

March 1-8

The biggest astrological transits of February snuck into March. Mercury is still retrograde in Pisces, and our 2nd eclipse (a Total Lunar Eclipse in Virgo) occurs Tuesday, March 3. If you want to see the Moon turn red, it happens early in the morning before sunrise (central time)

Astrologically, this Total Lunar eclipse is like a super-powered Full Moon, bringing things to a climax. The Moon is mid-Virgo while the Sun and four other planets are in Pisces. Virgo/Pisces eclipses sometimes have a broad impact on public (and personal) health and well-being, directly or indirectly.

Eclipses in mutable signs can be confusing and multidirectional. We are already in the eclipse zone, but it’s at its most intense while the Moon is in Virgo Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. You’ll find me in the bathtub Tuesday morning, with candles lit and Ketu (South Node) chants playing from YouTube.

In the background, Mercury and the Sun form trine aspects to Jupiter. This is supportive and inspiring. Then on Friday, Venus leaves Pisces behind for the hotter, drier climate of Aries, where she heads into Neptune and Saturn. You may notice a strong urge to make changes in your relationships, appearance, or aesthetic preferences.

Your move: The eclipse may dial up sensitivity, which can be wonderful for spiritual practice, dreams, intuition, and creativity. However, if you’re not typically an emotional person, you may feel seasick from the waves. Mind your intake and allow yourself extra time for rest. You may find it best to avoid social media and sensationalist news stories. With Mercury retrograde, communications can be unreliable. Allow extra time and confirm before you act.

March 8-14

The power surges and outages of eclipse season are wrapping up, and Jupiter turns direct in Cancer. The Greater Benefic will be at its strongest from now until late June, and we have a couple of periods when the skies are clearer. One of those bright starts now and lasts until Mars enters Aries on April 9—the second starts in the latter half of May.

Retrograde Mercury is trine Jupiter on March 9, the 2nd of three of these trines. The first was on Feb 16, while Mercury was direct, and the third will be on April 3, when Mercury is direct again. If Mercury is important in your birth chart or by timing, pay attention to this timeline. If you’ve been working on a project, dealing with paperwork, or trying to solve a communications or technology problem, follow Mercury’s path for the resolution.

Here is an example from my own life:

1. February 16 - My property insurance premium was due. The mortgage company always pays it from my escrow account, so I assumed it would happen as usual. It did not! A few days later, I learned that my insurance policy had been canceled for non-payment. I paid the premium out of pocket to reinstate it and began communicating with both the mortgage and insurance companies. Trying to get to the root cause and get my money back has not been smooth or easy. I’ve received inconsistent responses and found additional errors.
2. March 9 – I anticipate that a refund check will be issued sometime between this date and March 15, when Mercury meets Mars.
3. April 3 – I predict that the matter will be fully resolved so that I am made whole, and the necessary corrections happen for the future.

Your move: Eclipse season is winding down, and with Jupiter turning direct, the skies are beginning to clear. This is a good week to revisit any plans or decisions that felt muddled over the past month—fresh momentum is on the way! If you’re curious how this shift affects your personal chart, look at which houses Cancer, Pisces, and Sagittarius fall in for you. If you’re not sure, that’s a great reason to pull up your birth chart (or reach out for a reading).

March 15-21

Mercury-Mars conjunctions are often loud, and this one is complicated by Mercury’s retrograde and amplified by the proximity of the North Node and a trine to a newly direct Jupiter. This gives it great potential, which can be helpful or harmful. Be mindful of what you say or write; it may spread widely.

On the upside, people can be moved by spiritual, compassionate, or awe-inspired words or deeds. Something beautiful or sacred can spread fast and far. However, lies, misunderstandings, and displaced aggression can also spread easily. People may be accident-prone because they are easily carried away or confused. Stay alert for scams or disinformation and check travel conditions.

There is still a full house at the New Moon in Pisces on March 18. As each planet moves into Aries, it meets Neptune and Saturn, learning about the new agenda adopted on Feb 20 (a 36-year term). While eclipse season is over and the Saturn-Neptune conjunction has passed, we are still coming to terms with the new (or fully exposed) reality. This New Moon inspires a collective question: “The show is over. Now what?”

Jupiter hosts the New Moon from an exalted position in Cancer and is conjunct with two ancient, powerful stars.

(1) Canopus was a navigational aid for civilizations since 6,000 BCE. Global myths speak of it as a pathfinder, a spirit guide, the father of time, and a sacred point of stillness.

(2) Sirius is our brightest star (2nd to the Sun). Its rise was the foundation of Egypt’s calendar as early as 5,000 BCE. It symbolizes ordinary things becoming sacred, small acts becoming collective symbols, and immortality (at the cost of mortal life).

Look for themes of faith, compassion, and hope, along with a collective emotional outpouring, in this combination.

In other good news, Mercury turns direct on March 20 as the Sun moves into Aries. Mars forms a fortunate trine with Jupiter on March 21. Challenges with technology, communications, or paperwork may start to clear up. Progress is at hand.

Your move: The Mercury-Mars conjunction on March 15 carries real amplifying power—words, messages, or actions taken this week can travel further and land harder than usual, for better or worse. Use that energy intentionally. Speak up for something meaningful, share creative ideas, or reach out to someone you’ve been meaning to contact.

March 22-31

From March 22 to 25, the Sun meets Neptune and Saturn. This is a powerful time for soul-searching. The world has changed, and the future is still taking shape. It’s time for leaders to emerge, take stock, tell the truth, and set a new agenda.

Venus leaves Aries for Taurus on March 30, which is a positive turn for relationships, peace, and pleasure. With Jupiter and Venus now both in stronger positions, the next ten days may offer a welcome respite.

Your move: The Sun’s conjunctions with Neptune (Mar 22) and Saturn (Mar 25) encourage reflection, inspiration, and commitment. What kind of future do you want? How can you use your unique gifts, talents, and strengths to build a better future? Listen to your heart.
