March 2023

A game of musical chairs

Table of Contents

It looks like the planets are playing a game of musical chairs this month. When the music stops, there is a scramble to find a seat. Three of the big guys keep their chairs, Jupiter in Aries, Uranus in Taurus and Neptune in Pisces. Everyone else lands in new places.

For us, it means big changes. Situations resolve. Chapters end. People leave. New things begin.

The first week of the month may give you whiplash. Venus and Jupiter meet today (Mar 1), an aspect that is normally fantastic. You may find unexpected happiness, an urge to indulge, or a promising opportunity. It’s a great day to start a project, ask for support, do anything that needs a positive energetic boost.

But there is also a more sober aspect in the sky. Mercury the messenger meets serious-minded Saturn at the very last degree of Aquarius (Mar 2). Saturn has been in Aquarius since Dec 2020, requiring us to re-evaluate the systems and structures of our lives. My life has changed dramatically. What’s changed for you over the last 28 months? Where have you taken on new responsibilities or learned to manage with restrictions? Thursday and Friday invite reflection.

The Music Stops, Saturn Moves

The first musical pause is Mar 7. There is a Full Moon in Virgo and Saturn enters Pisces, where he will stay for the next 3 years. This is a major transit in everyone’s life, but people with planets or important points in the mutable signs (Pisces, Sagittarius, Gemini and Virgo) will be most personally affected.

The Music Restarts, but Something is Out of Tune

Astrologer Leisa Schaim described mid-March as ‘messy, ' and that is probably accurate. In Oct-Nov 2022, we had an extended time when the planet Mars (focused drive, assertion, action) was in a square to oceanic Neptune. We revisit that Mar 14-17, but this time it’s Mars in a tense standoff with Neptune, the Sun, and Mercury.

  • If you feel like you’re swimming against the current, relax and wait it out.
  • If you can’t see the shore, don’t panic.

This will pass, and Mars will leave Gemini—soon!

The Music Stops Again. Mars & Pluto Move.

The Mar 20 Equinox brings new vitality. The Sun enters Aries, and the Moon catches up quickly, starting a new lunar cycle at 1° Aries on Mar 21. This is a powerful, pivotal week for beginnings.

  • Mar 23, Mars finishes his 7-month residency in Gemini and enters Cancer.
  • Mar 25, Pluto leaves Capricorn for the first time since 2008, stepping into Aquarius. He will be in and out for a couple of years, straddling the end of Capricorn and beginning of Aquarius.

You Can Dance.

Big shifts can be unsettling for human minds, but Venus offers a balm of pleasure and ease. Venus is strong in her home sign of Taurus from Mar 16 - Apr 10, and (finally) free from hard aspects with Mars and Saturn. It is the best Venus energy we have had in a long time, encouraging us to slow down, find some ease, and take pleasure in the changing season.

What brings your connection and joy? Schedule it. Play your favorite music, dance, eat your favorite foods, cuddle with your loved ones.

March closes with a trio of transits that can offer good news, pleasant surprises, and sudden progress. Between Mar 28-30, Mercury conjoins Jupiter in Aries, Mars trines Saturn, and Venus meets Uranus in Taurus.

Golden Hours

A quick look at dates and times I’ve highlighted. All times are CST.

Mar 1

The waxing Moon in Cancer highlights the Venus-Jupiter conjunction in Aries. Take a risk or just enjoy yourself, but don’t overdo it.

Mar 4, 7 - 8 am and 12:15 - 2:25 pm

The Leo Moon is trine Venus or Jupiter, and they have the power to say YES. Launch something or ask for support. You might be surprised at what you receive.

Mar 24, all day

The Moon is in Taurus, meeting Venus at 5:30 am and then Uranus at 6:51 pm. Take the day off and do something out-of-the-ordinary for FUN. Get weird. I couldn’t help but notice that in New Orleans it’s the Home & Garden show, the Treme' Creole Gumbo Festival, the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival, and (with perfect timing) The Creeps and Freaks Pub Crawl. I hope this month brings resolution to your long-standing concerns, and that you find pleasure and inspiration in the changes. Thanks for your support.
