There's a drastic mood change after Mercury activates the Grand Water Trine for the final time in early December—a harmonious flow between water signs that has supported emotional and intuitive work. Now that water hits a dam. The planets shift from cooperative trines to challenging squares. In December, you may need to work harder to make progress or even change your approach.

Transit of the Month: A Square Dance with Saturn & Neptune
December brings challenging footwork, as planets square dance with Saturn and Neptune. All the fast-moving planets in optimistic Sagittarius must contend with Saturn and Neptune in watery Pisces. The result? Plans meet resistance, clarity becomes elusive, and forward motion requires more effort than usual.
When a planet squares Saturn, it can lead to frustration, delays, or detours. It might take the shape of a physical limitation, a lack of resources, or an authority figure.
This time, planets squaring Saturn get dynamic dual action. Fresh off Saturn, each square Neptune can add confusion, indecision, or a lack of motivation. Your usual coping methods may not work.
It may be exhausting, but there is also potential magic in the duo. Saturn and Neptune together can inspire you to take on the responsibility and work required to build new structures to support your dreams. When you can’t take the usual path, you get new views.
Here is the timeline for each planet's entry into the square dance.
Dec 5: Full Moon crosses over Mars and squares Saturn & Neptune
Dec 8-14: Mars squares Saturn & Neptune, accented by the Moon in Virgo Dec 11-12.
Dec 16-20: The Sun squares Saturn & Neptune. The Moon joins the dance for the Dec 19 New Moon.
Dec 20-23: Venus squares Saturn & Neptune
Dec 30-Jan 1: Mercury square Saturn & Neptune, with the Moon in Pisces on Dec 26.
See how this transit keeps repeating! December requires strategy over spontaneity.

Dec 1-7
The best few days of the month occur early, wrapping up with Mercury’s last trine to Jupiter and Saturn. The curtains close on a three-act drama that started in October.
The Full Moon in Gemini on Dec 4 highlights communication and information flow. On Dec 5, the Moon activates the Mars-Saturn square, a preview of the friction ahead.
Your move: Complete year-end projects, have meaningful conversations, and make decisions while Mercury's supportive aspects provide clarity. By week's end, patience becomes your primary tool.
Dec 8-14
The week kicks off with Mars’ square to Saturn, but it’s also heavily flavored by Neptune, which is changing from retrograde to direct motion. When a slow giant planet like Neptune turns, it takes a few days for it to slow down and come to a standstill. From October 23, 2025, to January 26, 2026, Neptune loiters at the final (30^th) degree of Pisces. Neptune is moving so slowly that it spends six whole days at its direct station point, 29° 22’. As a result, Neptune is big news all week, and the Moon, Mercury, and Mars interact with the Ocean God.
The first interpretation that comes to mind is bad weather, combining wind and water. Neptune is associated with the spread of fluids as well as rumors, delusions, and toxic or infectious agents. Mars conveys speed and carelessness that can lead to accidents or violence. Mercury is associated with wind, messages or news, transportation, and movement.
Sometimes planetary transits show up in dreams. Psychologist Renn Butler says people often dream about cars, boats, and planes sinking into bodies of water, or about drivers navigating icy roads, when Mars, Saturn & Neptune are in aspect. It’s slippery and slushy.
All transits have a potential upside, too. Watch an upswelling of romanticism, spiritual ideals, compassion, or passive resistance movements. It’s a perfect time to watch a sweeping cinematic portrayal of a historic war. I recommend the new American Revolution documentary by Ken Burns, playing on PBS.
Your move: Navigate uncertainty with flexibility. Postpone major decisions if possible and focus on creative work, spiritual practice, or rest. Triple-check details and give others the benefit of the doubt. Build in extra time and backup plans for everything.
Dec 15-21
The New Moon at 29 Sagittarius occurs on Dec 19. Venus aligns with the Sun and Moon, and all three are square Saturn and Neptune.
Multiple esoteric sources complement the zodiac and help with interpretation. I sometimes refer to the Sabian Symbols, where the image for 29 Sagittarius is “a fat boy mowing the lawn”. It’s an uncomfortable image of labor. An unfit youth maintains an unnatural environment, keeping up appearances for the neighbors. A child hurries through chores, whether as a punishment or a household duty. There is exertion and sweat.
The Sun and Venus squares to Saturn suggest repressive authority figures and feelings of restriction, punishment, or isolation. Upside? Seriously assessing the situation and making a long-term commitment to deal with reality. Becoming or turning to wise, trustworthy, mature leaders.
Your move: Assess what's worth the effort. The squares to Saturn reveal where expectations, authority figures, or resource limits create genuine obstacles. Have honest conversations about capacity and say no to performative work. Identify which commitments deserve your energy in 2026.
Dec 22-28
Sun and Venus enter Capricorn. Where planets in Sagittarius are more impulsive and idealistic, in Capricorn, you have a more stoic, do-the-work attitude. Sagittarians often want to fight or flee from restrictions; Capricorns deal with them head-on.
Your move: Shift from resistance to strategy. Break overwhelming goals into concrete steps. Identify one structural change—in your schedule, relationships, or approach—that addresses a recurring frustration. Capricorn season rewards those who do the work.
Dec 29-31
The final days of December are intense. Mercury wraps up the square dance with Saturn and Neptune while out-of-bounds. Mars and Venus are out of bounds, too,
which means they operate outside usual constraints, for better or worse. These neighboring planets align with the fixed star Facies (through conjunction and parallel aspects).
You can see Facies in the Sagittarius constellation, as the eye of the Archer. It is historically associated with sharp focus, accidents, and confrontations. It strikes me as an unfortunate spot to mix with rowdy planets.
Your move: Exercise caution with intensity. Channel restless energy into physical activity rather than confrontation. If anger at injustice surfaces, find constructive outlets—write the letter, donate to a cause, plan January action. Stay alert while traveling or using equipment.
Golden Hours
Dec 1: Waxing gibbous Moon in Aries, moving from a trine to Mars, then square Jupiter. It's a Monday—good for action before the month's heavier patterns set in. Jump in and do things while momentum is on your side.
