Between Eclipses
As we enter December, the universe is inviting us to examine our priorities and perspectives in light of what has happened in the past two years. We start the month between eclipses. Maybe you heard about the lunar eclipse in Taurus that happened on Nov 19? It was in the news as one of the longest eclipses (3 hours 28 minutes) in 1,000 years, and it was visible in North America.
Eclipses always come in pairs, and align with new or full moons. The next one will be a total solar eclipse on Dec 4 in Sagittarius. The darkness will impact Antarctica and the southern tips of South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Why do eclipses matter? They impact world affairs and sometimes your own life if they land in a sensitive part of your birth chart. Tonight’s (early morning on Dec 4) solar eclipse is the last one in a series that started in June 2020. It may bring news of endings, losses, or give you that final push to let go of something that no longer suits your needs.
Eclipses are often an emotional time, so don’t be surprised if strong feelings seem to come from nowhere. If you can, make time to rest and nurture yourself tonight. (I have a massage and a salt water bath on my agenda.) This weekend is a good opportunity to reflect on the changes that have happened in the last 18 months. Cleaning house would also be a great use of this eclipse energy!
Venus in Capricorn
The planet Venus is also making big astro news. Look toward the southwest sky in the early evening, and you’ll see her as a bright glittering diamond in the sky. She entered the sign of Capricorn in November and will be here for an extra-long time due to her retrograde period (Dec 19 - Jan 28). Planets don’t really move backward, of course, but that is how it appears to us on Earth as we also orbit around the Sun. Venus is typically in a sign for one month but she will be in Capricorn for four months. This extended stay means that she will have a strong impact on the Capricorn area of your birth chart. From a global perspective, watch for news stories about the following topics:
- Women in power, especially in historically male positions
- Power struggles or negotiations among individuals, groups or nations
- Progress, delays or protests related to civil rights or social justice issues
- The oppression or betrayal of women and justice issues surrounding it
- Serious creativity, prominent artists and art works

Mid-month, there are some bright spots to mark on your planner! I like the evening of Dec 13 for getting things done with cooperation from others. Dec 16 is a great day for a social gathering. The weekend of Dec 19 - 20 looks promising, but people may be extra-sensitive, so err on the side of kindness.
As we move toward Christmas Day, tensions will likely erupt in the world around us. Peace-loving Venus will connect with intense Pluto just as a tough conflict arises between authoritative Saturn and revolutionary Uranus. These titans have been battling it out all year, with exact transits in February and June. Their final square-off is Christmas Eve.
Finish your holiday shopping by Dec 19, and allow yourself (and others) lots of space and grace Dec 21 - 27.
The outlook brightens at the end of the month, when generous, jovial Jupiter moves into his home sign of Pisces on Dec 28. People will feel happier and more hopeful moving into 2022, much like the early summer months of 2021. It’s a great energy for New Year’s events, resolutions, and dreams.
