After two years of a pandemic, the big question on everyone’s mind is “Will 2022 be an easier, better year?” The simple answer is that it’s complicated. Generally, 2022 looks better than the harsh transits of 2020-2021, but we are not entirely out of the woods. In 2020, we began a long-term cycle that is forcing us, as a collective, to deal with challenges that we have been building for decades.
The impact of problems like climate change, economic inequality, social injustice and political extremism will not suddenly fade away. The pandemic is not over. We start January with a surge in the Omicron variant of COVID-19, and there is a distinct possibility we will see further virus developments in the fall. But that is an exploration for another day…let’s focus on this month.

Much like the weather, astrology cycles have broad trends while the impact on smaller groups and individuals can vary. For example, when I look at the planetary lineup in January, there is a big pileup of planets in the signs of Capricorn and Aquarius, both ruled by Saturn. This pattern forecasts extremely cold weather across North America. We can expect frigid temperatures with ice and snowstorms, but some locations will experience unseasonable warmth. Your experience may vary.
The January Outlook? Cold & On Hold
January begins with four planets in Capricorn — the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Pluto. Last month I wrote about Venus and her extended visit in this sign. I also recorded a video that you can access here. Venus and Pluto will be here all month, while the Sun moves on to Aquarius Jan 19. Mercury moves out on Jan 2, but then returns for a visit Jan 25 right after Mars joins the Capricorn party.
Venus is retrograde, and soon she will disappear from our evening sky. All planets become invisible to us when they get close to the Sun and its overwhelmingly bright light. Venus visibly reemerges as a morning star around January 17. She will turn to direct motion on January 29 but stay in Capricorn until early March. Her direct turn should bring us some clarity at month’s end.
Just to make things interesting, we also have Mercury retrograde from January 14 to February 3. With both Venus and Mercury backtracking and Saturn ruling the skies, I’m calling this month “COLD & ON HOLD”. You can expect delays, reversals, and frustrations to pop up. Progress will be slow and uneven. Be prepared with patience, perseverance and a solid Plan B! It may not be the bright new beginning we want, but this slow start gives us time to reflect and review — making decisions about our priorities, values and goals.

Bright Spots
Jupiter snuck out of Aquarius on Dec 28 and moved into his Pisces happy place. The last time Jupiter was here, mid-May to July in 2021, the CDC lifted the mask mandate in the US, and we were able to socialize more freely. Remember those early summer months?
Jupiter offers a balm of hope and faith. You may notice improvement in some parts of your life now - even if other parts feel rough. Lean in to the people and places that offer you pleasure and peace. Watch for promising opportunities that may be sprouting. This influence will grow as we move into spring.
There are always bright spots to seize and enjoy. Here are some of my favorite days in January with suggestions for how to use the energies:
- Jan 1-2 The Moon will aspect Jupiter and Venus around the time of the New Moon (Jan 2 12:33 pm CST). That puts a positive spin on things, although when the Moon is in Capricorn, we tend to be more serious than social. Get your chores done on Saturday and use Sunday for planning. You may feel inspired to try something new - do it!
- Jan 5 Use the evening hours to socialize or dream. Make a vision board, write out your desires. Jupiter wants to help you open new doors.
- Jan 8-9 The Aries Moon is great for physical action. Take a hike, play a game, clean out a closet, use that energy!
- Jan 15-16 The Moon moves into her home of Cancer mid-morning, and it’s time to nurture and nourish. Show someone you love them (especially yourself!) Get cozy at home, and keep some tissues handy in case you need a good cry. Pay attention to your physical and emotional needs.
- Jan 27 My favorite part of this day is the morning, while the Moon is approaching an aspect with Jupiter and in Sagittarius. Good for bold action in the direction of your dreams. Do keep in mind that Mercury and Venus are retrograde, so things may not go smoothly and quickly. Doesn’t mean it is not worth trying!
